  8.      This program,  the Interactive  Computer Ephemeris,  is the successor to
  9.      the Floppy  Almanac.  This version of the Interactive Computer Ephemeris
  10.      allows computation  of ephemeris  data over a time span of approximately
  11.      250 years;  the first valid date is December 21, 1800 and the last valid
  12.      date is  June 7,  2049.   The fundamental ephemeris data has been highly
  13.      compressed in  this new  program.   Although 250 times as much ephemeris
  14.      data is  provided in the Interactive Computer Ephemeris as in the Floppy
  15.      Almanac, only  four 360  kilobyte 5¼  inch disks  or two 720 kilobyte 3½
  16.      inch disks are needed to hold it.

  18.      This is  a Beta  version of  the  Interactive  Computer  Ephemeris;  the
  19.      program is not yet in its final form.  In particular, the user interface
  20.      will be  changing.  Many requests have been received and as many of them
  21.      as possible  will be  implemented.  It is our plan to replace these Beta
  22.      versions at  no cost  to the  original purchaser.   If you obtained your
  23.      copy from  the Naval  Observatory, you will be notified by mail when the
  24.      final version is available.

  26.      The Interactive  Computer Ephemeris  works by  reading and  expanding  a
  27.      Compressed Ephemeris  file it before it does any calculations.  Briefly,
  28.      the ephemeris  data for  a time  span of  4000 days  is stored in a file
  29.      called EPMInn.DAT,  where nn  is a  number from  01  to  24.    For  the
  30.      Interactive  Computer  Ephemeris  to  be  able  to  find  the  necessary
  31.      ephemeris file,  it must  be in  the current  directory, on  the current
  32.      drive.   Not all  24 of the ephemeris files need be present at any time.
  33.      An error message will be displayed if the file cannot be found.

  35.      The machine  requirements for  running this  version of  the Interactive
  36.      Computer Ephemeris  are: IBM PC or compatible with 384 kilobytes of RAM.
  37.      MS DOS  2.1 or  higher is necessary.  A hard disk capable of holding all
  38.      the Interactive Computer Ephemeris files in a single directory is highly
  39.      recommended but  is NOT  required.   The arrangement of the files on the
  40.      360k disks  is as listed below.  Each pair of disks #1 and #2, and disks
  41.      #3 and #4 are combined onto a single 720k disk, when distributed on that
  42.      media.

  81.      The first  file in  the list  is  the  executable  file  comprising  the
  82.      Interactive Computer  Ephemeris.   At least  three additional  files are
  83.      required for  execution.   These files  are: PARAM.DAT,  EPHnn.DAT,  and
  84.      ICE.DFT.   EPHnn.DAT simply  represents and  one ephemeris data file.  A
  85.      minimum of  1 of  these files  must  be  available  to  the  Interactive
  86.      Computer Ephemeris  if it  is to  be able to do any calculations.  It is
  87.      required that these files be on the currently active disk.

  89.      To begin execution of the program, simply type the name ICE (or ice) and
  90.      press the  'ENTER' key.   The  program will  then be loaded into memory,
  91.      after which,  the Interactive  Computer Ephemeris masthead and main menu
  92.      will scroll onto the screen.

  94.      Since the Interactive Computer Ephemeris is menu- and prompt-driven, the
  95.      novice user  can usually  "feel" his  way around its various options and
  96.      obtain useful  information.   One can  become fairly proficient in using
  97.      the Interactive Computer Ephemeris simply through a series of trial-and-
  98.      error runs.   Nevertheless, there is a significant amount of information
  99.      about how  the program  works which  is not  obvious but  which is quite
  100.      important for  all but  the most  casual  user.    This  information  is
  101.      contained  in   the  Interactive   Computer   Ephemeris   User's   Guide
  102.      documentation distributed by the Naval Observatory with each Interactive
  103.      Computer Ephemeris disk.
